Visions of the future
Visions of the future
The cartoon was drawn by John Collins, 1960 (retrieved from: http://collection.mccord.mcgill.ca/en/collection/artifacts/M965.199.9385/)
As the Democratic candidate for president in the 1960 election, Senator John F. Kennedy had visions of the United States moving forward into a "New Frontier" both at home and abroad. He envisioned the United States as a nation that would regain its cultural and political standing as a dominant world leader. His goals, once he became president, were to role back the advances made by the communist in places such as Cuba and Southeast Asia and to protect American interests in Europe including West Germany and the West Berlin.

Questions to consider:
- Who are the people gathered around the feet of John F. Kennedy?
- What is Kennedy attempting to protect the world from in the cartoon?
- Why does Kennedy appear ambivalent about his surrounding in the cartoon?
